Our Process

How is Your Bare Knitwear Garment Made?

Intentional Design

Conceptualized at our design studio on the West Coast of Canada, each Bare Knitwear garment is thoughtfully designed with a focus on wearability and purpose. Emphasis is placed on producing garments that will seamlessly integrate with your wardrobe and add ease and joy to your life.

The development stage is where the collaborative work with our partners in Peru begins. Fibres, shapes, finishings and textures are all extensively researched. We create a paper pattern for the garment first and work with our partners to decide on a manufacturing technique that best suits the aesthetic and purpose of each garment. Our partners in Peru are experts working with industrial machines, traditional knitting needles and hand operated knitting looms.

Fibre Research & Swatch Development

Selecting the right yarn for a particular garment is an extensive process. We consider how the yarn will affect the overall shape and drape of the garment, how it wears, where it comes from and of course-how it feels!

Once we narrow down our yarn selection swatches are knit in a variety of tensions, stitches and fibres prior to developing the first sample. Occasionally,  we will work directly with the yarn distributor to custom develop a fibre blend to better suit the needs of our garments.

Proto Development

After the yarn is selected, the first sample is produced!

Wash & Wear Tests

After our sample is developed, we put it to the test and conduct wash and wear tests. Wear testing our designs in our day to day lives gives us a better understanding of how our clothing functions throughout the day.

Final Adjustments

At this stage, we conduct a garment fitting where we dissect everything about the design. All the feedback from our wash and wear tests is considered and we make our final adjustments. Minor adjustments such as changing the shape of an armhole or adjusting the way the pocket is stitched on the garment can have a big impact on the over all fit, feel and function of the design.

Colour Selection & Development

Our hope is that our natural, muted knits pair easily with any wardrobe. We select our timeless hues to highlight the craftsmanship and texture of the garment.

Ready for Production!

We launch our collections into production six to eight months prior to launching the collection to the public. This provides our manufacturers with long, flexible lead times and ensures each garment is carefully crafted and inspected at each stage of the process. We hope the love, care and thought put into each garment reminds you of where your garment came from and adds ease and joy into your life.
